This nonfiction work reproduces the letters sent by the author's father, James Edward Cartmill, to the author's mother, Cora Jean McKinney, during World War II, 1944. James Cartmill was an airplane mechanic in the Army and was present at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked by the Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941. He met the author's mother through her brother, Gael, and corresponded with her daily from 1943 until his discharge in 1945. The letters are of historical significance, and they reveal the character and constancy of James Cartmill, who died of leukemia at the age of thirty-three. Although the author was only three years old at the time of her father's death, the quality of the love and attention he gave her has stood her in good stead for a lifetime. Read more
